Q U B E   R E C O R D S 

Qube Records is the in-house record label and music hub of Mounts Bay Academy, a secondary school in Penzance, Cornwall, enabling students to write, record, release and promote their own original music.  Penzance is a town with a rich heritage of music, performance and the arts and is steeped in originality. In 2014, musician, producer and youth worker Darren Roberts recognised this generative creativity in it’s students and founded Qube Records as an outlet for original music and song and to give young songwriters, performers and artists a real world authentic audience for their work, regardless of background, experience, or any factor other than the willingness to have a go. 

 

In 2015 one album, Ferris Wheel, was released through the label, with 10 original songs by students aged 11-16. The album opened the floodgates and now, 5 years later we have released over 30 albums featuring over 60 different artists. We have just surpassed 30,000 digital downloads in 54 countries around the world, with songs written and performed by our students in Penzance heard by people in places as diverse as Guatemala, Costa Rica, India and Hong Kong!

 

In 2018 we took our performers on the road and embarked on a tour of Belgium and Holland receiving rave reviews and having once in a lifetime experiences. This caught the attention of the press both locally and nationally, and we received coverage on the BBC TV News for our exploits!

 

As well as students of Mounts Bay Academy, Qube Records is proud to work with the wider music community, recording and producing albums, singles and EPs from bands and artists both locally and from further afield. In 2019 we were awarded the “Favourite Studio” Award by Music Expo UK as voted for by the public.

In 2023 a solo release by one of our students was streamed a quarter of a million times in the USA, prompting lots of media coverage and live performances on Radio and BBC TV, further expanding the recognition of the Qube Records project. Over the following 12 months we had students perform fully original sets at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Boardmasters Festival and The Royal Albert Hall, cementing the project's standing on the national stage. Regular performances up and down the UK, and touring Europe every other summer have broadened the horizons of countless young musicians and created opportunities and experiences that were never there before. 

 

We have developed a special relationship with the South West Punk scene in particular, producing albums by bands like The Surgeons and Die Spangle, and also hosting several huge Punk shows in our 2 professional concert venues, with headliners ranging from Dirt Box Disco to TV Smith. We also have 2 fully kitted out rehearsal spaces available to hire.

 

Now in it's 12th year and with well over 1 million worldwide streams and downloads, Qube Records continues to strive to provide an industry standard vehicle to students at Mounts Bay Academy and original artists of all ages and abilities in the South West and beyond. We believe passionately that allowing young musicians the freedom, confidence and safety to create original, daring new music gives them the best chance of an exciting musical future, and that supporting our local community to make it's own music too creates the perfect culture for our young artists to grow up in.  Whether you’re looking for somewhere to practise, perform, or record, we’ve got you covered.
